Statement of Significance
C Listed - Local Significance
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
47 Malop Street has architectural and historic significance at a local level. It is an unusual example of commercial architecture in the Geelong area. The facade is reasonably intact at first floor level, and retains its characteristic siting and form, and unusual Art Nouveau features including detailed pilasters. The original ground floor shop fronts have been substantially altered. Removal of the cladding would enhance the overall appearance of the building in the streetscape. The building is of historic significance because of its association with Balfour Brothers, notable Geelong Mechanics.

Description
DESCRIPTION
47 Malop Street is an attached double storey brick parapet building which is reasonably intact despite alterations to the ground floor shop fronts. The brick and render facade features unusual details displaying Art Nouveau influence, the facade is divided into two rectangular bays by pilasters with moulded bases. The opening on the first floor are casement windows and are covered by curved protruding elements supported by simple brackets. Above these elements the parapet has been inappropriately clad and are decorated with intricate foliage mouldings. The ground floor facade consists of aluminum and glass shop fronts in non-traditional proportions. Removing the cladding on the parapet would enhance the appearance of the facade.
