Why is it significant?
The property at 748 Heidelberg-Kinglake Road, Hurstbridge is historically significant for associations with the early development of Hurstbridge. The residence is located on an early selection owned by C. H. Hawkins. The house constructed in circa 1918 is an early surviving residence in the main street of Hurstbridge dating from the boom period within the township stimulated by the orchard industry and the coming of the railway in 1912. The property is of historical significance for its associations with Emily and Charlotte Hawkins who owned and ran a drapery business in the township from 1918 to at least the 1940s. (Criteria A, B & H)
The property at 748 Heidelberg-Kinglake Road, Hurstbridge is aesthetically significant as a substantially intact example of an inter-war bungalow. Key features of the style include the overall all encompassing gable roof form with a front verandah, timber framed windows and fibre board wall cladding with timber straps. The residence is significant for its contribution to the surviving collection of early 20th century buildings in the main street of Hurstbridge indicating the appearance of the township during its hey day around the 1920s. Residence - Physical Description 1
The residence at 748 Heidelberg-Kinglake Road, Hurstbridge is a timber framed inter-war style bungalow. The residence extends out from the steep embankment with a tall underside to the building. This underside is clad with horizontal timber boards with a narrow gap between.
The residence has a main gable roof running parallel with the road and a skillion roofed section to the rear. The building also has a hipped roof verandah across the front. The roofs are clad in corrugated metal sheet. The walls are clad in boards with timber strap joints.
