What is significant?
The former Hurstbridge Motor Garage located at 849 Heidelberg-Kinglake Road, Hurstbridge. The original form, materials and detailing of the garage and saleroom as well as the later workshop contributes to the significance of the place.
How is it significant?
The former Hurstbridge Motor Garage located at 849 Heidelberg-Kinglake Road, Hurstbridge is of local historic and aesthetic significance to the Shire of Nillumbik.
Why is it significant?
The former Hurstbridge Motor Garage is historically significant for the role it has played in the commercial activities of the Hurstbridge township since the 1920s. The 1925 construction date of the garage and saleroom represents the period of high activity in Hurstbridge following the extension of the railway from Eltham to Hurstbridge in 1912. The property is of historical significance for its illustration of the development of the car industry and in particular GM Holden. The Garage became a sub-dealership for Holden in the late 1940s and the first Holden car in the district was sold from the business. The property is also of historical significance for its associations with the prominent Brock family. Geoff Brock, the father of Motor Sport legend Peter Brock managed the business from 1948 until 1953. (Criteria A & H)
The former Hurstbridge Motor Garage is aesthetically significant as an excellent intact example of a 1920s garage. The 1925 building retains its original overall form with gable roof and skillion roofed verandah to the front, corner show room window and corrugated iron sheet cladding. It is important as a landmark early commercial building exhibiting common characteristics with other pre 1930s buildings in the township. The garage is significant for its contribution to the surviving collection of early 20th century buildings in the main street of Hurstbridge indicating the appearance of the township during its hey day around the 1920s. Garage - Physical Description 1
The former Hurstbridge Motors building is timber framed with corrugated iron sheet cladding. The building has two main sections. The garage section has a gable roof running parallel with Heidelberg-Kinglake Road and an almost flat roofed verandah across the front facing Heidelberg -Kinglake Road. The verandah would have provided shelter over the area that may have contained petrol bowsers. This section of the building also comprises a large roller door at one end of the front elevation and a corner window and glazed double entry doors at the other end.
The mechanic's workshop section at the southern end of the building has a skillion roof with no eaves. There is a roller door and adjacent large window that is substantially covered over. There is painted signage to the upper section of the front elevation providing details for Hurstbridge Motor Body Repairs. The rear of the building backs on to the railway line. There is a metal flue extending from the gable roof at the rear of the building.
