Memorial Window Description & History
Stained Glass Window at Melbourne Chapel of St. Peter, Missions to Seafarers Anglican Chapel - Memorial Window Description & History
The Reverend FL Oliver was responsible for ordering many memorial windows for St. Peter's Chapel at the Mission for Seamen, Melbourne -from 1933 to 1958. The memorial to the men of HMAS Jervis Bay given by the Ballarat branch of the Seaman's Mission and the Ladies' Guild, was unveiled by Chaplain Oliver on 14 December 1947. The small round-headed window measured 24 1/2 x 17 1/4 inches and was ordered from Brooks, Robinson & Co. in May of that year. The design showed men on a life raft, seeing the vision of Christ before them and the Jervis Bay sinking on the horizon in the background. A second window, Jesus at the House of Martha and Mary, was unveiled during the same service; a memorial to Miss Karen Brady who was killed during the blackout while returning home from work at the Mission.
