Memorial Window Description & History
Stained Glass Window at Portland Scots' Presbyterian Church - Memorial Window Description & History
In one of the two lights, an Australian soldier was depicted in a field of Flanders poppies, one hand over his heart and the Torch of Life in the other. In the second light a hovering angel bears the laurel wreath of victory. The window was described in the Brooks, Robinson job book as 'similar to Lawson Castlemaine' and the same figures as 'Taylor, Kilmore' as can be seen in entries for these windows. By the 1920s it became acceptable to represent the Australian digger in his distinctive uniform, rather than a saint of medieval knight or Roman soldier, all of which were previously used to convey the attributes of the valiant martyr. Each light measured 90 x 22 inches with a circular tracery piece 14 inches in diameter. The window was ordered from Brooks, Robinson & Co. on 24 October 1928 and unveiled by the Reverend WH McMeekin on Sunday 17 February 1929.
