Memorial Window Description & History
Stained Glass Window at Portland Wesley Methodist [now Uniting] Church - Memorial Window Description & History
This tall round-headed window was designed in the light-filled plain style often preferred by Methodist architects and congregations. The figure of St. George, with shield and sword, was set against a rectangular quarry background. The head of the window featured the Palm and Crown, emblems of Peace and Victory, with the same used as an alternating pattern in the border. Below the figure of the saint were the crossed flags of Britain and Australia. Although the maker is unknown, the stance and treatment of St. George has similarities with versions by Brooks, Robinson & Co. The window was unveiled on Henty Day, Sunday 19 November 1922, by the President of the Methodist Conference, the Reverend Joseph Snell.
