Statement of Significance
SIGNIFICANCE: A brick former Common Schoo built in 1865. It is relatively intact, although part of the design was never built. It is the only known surviving example of a multi-roomed Common School of the plan type derived from the Victorian Board of Education No.II plan. This demonstrates the direct influence of the standard school plans of the Privy Council Committee of Education in London on school plans in the Colony of Victoria .
This school building is of historical significance for its association with educational developments by the Board of Education and so demonstrates the effect of government action on the community life of the state and in Bacchus Marsh in the 1860s period. It is of state architectural significance as a rare and intact surviving example ofits building type.
Finally, the school is of social significance, as known and valued by the Bacchus Marsh community over 130 years, as part of their sense ofidentity of the place, and as a traditional community focus and meeting place.
