Residence - Physical Description 1
Description
The house at 192 McKillop Street is situated on a corner allotment with Garden Street, being of average size for the local area. The house has modest front setbacks to McKillop and Garden Streets, and a narrow western side setback. The frontages consist of grassed areas with perimeter shrubs and trees. An introduced capped timber paling fence, approximately 1500 mm high, forms the main boundary to the corner.
The predominantly single storey, asymmetrical, horizontal weatherboard, Federation styled house is characterised by complex roof forms consisting of a recessed broad hipped roof with a projecting attic gable to McKillop Street, projecting minor single storey gables to McKillop and Garden Streets, and a return broken back verandah at the corner that has a projecting gable on the diagonal. These roof forms are clad in galvanised corrugated iron. Early unpainted brick chimneys with rendered bands and terra cotta pots adorn the roofline. Modest overhangs with exposed timber rafters are features of the eaves.
An early feature of the design is the projecting window bays. There is a flat-roofed rectangular window bay under the Garden Street gable, which has timber framed casements and leadlighted highlights. Under the McKillop Street gable is a flat-roofed bowed bay with timber framed casements and leadlighted highlights. Typical of the Federation style is the corner projecting bay under the return verandah, which also has timber framed casements and leadlighted highlights. A pair of similar window openings is situated on the recessed projecting wing to the west.
The timber framed door openings on the Garden and McKillop Street facades are also early. The Garden Street doorway has an early timber door with leadlighted sidelights and highlights. The McKillop Street doorway has an introduced timber and glazed door with a transom window above.
Another early feature of the design is the return verandah. It has introduced square timber verandah columns with early decorative timber fretwork valances, an early timber boarded floor and an early timber lining board ceiling.
Other early decorative features of the design include the attic horizontal timber weatherboard wall cladding and balustrade simulating shingling, and the gable infill (stippled metal panelling and timber battening).
