GEELONG BREWERY SITE - History
The site has been occupied by several brewing companies since its establishment. The Cummings' brewery was first established in 1845 by John Cummings. The malthouse, a four level bluestone building, was built by Charles Liang in 1851.The building was purchased by James Volum in 1867, who built a three story bluestone brewery (and associated buildings). It remained under the ownership of the Volum family until 1958, when it was taken over by Carlton and United Brewers. Located on Corio Street, and backing onto Brougham Street are the remains of a bluestone wall. The orginal malthouse was converted into a single storey in the 1960s. Floors were removed and the walls lowered, windows and the two main doors were bricked in. The cellar was filled in and concreted over. The east wall was removed, a roller door installed in the rear wall and a new roof constructed. It is reported that when the walls were demolished the bluestone was thrown into the cellar.
A 1912 map shows the brewery in the centre of the block with the malting house fronting Corio Street. This includes Cumming & Son (in operation in 1854) and Volum Brewery (1867).
