Statement of Significance
What is significant?
This Weeping Pagoda (Sophora japonica 'Pendula') grows in the front garden of a private residence in central Ballarat.
How is it significant?
This Weeping Pagoda is significant for scientific and social reasons at the Regional level.
Why is it significant?
The Weeping Pagoda tree was a once a common planting in Ballarat gardens, but this cultivar is now rare. There is currently only one example in the Significant Tree Register (T12074, Eureka Stockade Reserve, Ballarat). Three others previously in the Register (T11302, T11326, T11327, all in Ballarat) have died and been removed. T11326, which was removed from Ballarat Hospital in 2002, inspired the owners to plant this specimen. This tree is healthy with a well-shaped crown and is a good example of a now uncommon cultivar.
