Statement of Significance
What is significant?
An individual Southern Magnolia located in the grounds of the Alzburg Resort, in the north-east corner of the carpark.
How is it significant?
This tree is significant for historic and social reasons at the Regional level.
Why is it significant?
This Southern Magnolia is a good specimen Regionally significant for its alleged historic connection with Baron Ferdinand von Mueller. It is believed that this tree is one of five Southern Magnolias imported to the region possibly by Baron Ferdinand von Mueller in the 1860’s. Another specimen was planted at the Jamieson Courthouse Hotel, and a third on Mt Buller Road in Mansfield. The fourth tree was believed to be at Merton however this specimen has not been found. There was one other tree however its location is unknown and it is presumed to have died.
The Alzburg Resort (former Convent of Mercy and Sacred Heart College) Southern Magnolia is also socially significant for its contribution to the grounds of one of the earliest buildings in Mansfield.
