Statement of Significance
B Listed - Regional Significance
The former Newtown and Chilwell Council Chamber designed by the notable Geelong architect, TJ Buchanana, was opened on 13 December 1916, and replaced an earlier 1860s small Hall and Council Chambers on the site. As the Barwon Region Child Health Centre, the 1916 building has regional historical significance as an illustration of the metropolis of Geelong and beyond. It has regional architectural significance as a fine and interesting Renaissance Revival design by Buchan. It's interest derives from Buchan's reworking of Michelangelo's last design: the Porta Pia in Rome (1561-64). It is also an important landmark in the City. The site has social significance to generations of Newtown and Chilwell citizen as the centre of civic activity for 130 years.
