GRC - HISTORIC PLACES DOCUMENTATION SHEET NO. 283
The primitive Methodist Church in Geelong West was established in 1855 in a small chapel in Weller Street. In 1868 the congregation had erected a new Early English Gothic Style church in Pakington Street, of unknown design origin and constructed of rock faced basalt with freestone dressings. Davidson and Henderson, architects, designed the Sunday School additions to the rear in 1876. the Pakington Street Methodist Church is a typical Early English Gothic style Parish Church with important associations with the development of the Methodist faith in Geelong.

St Philips Uniting Church is an important link with the Methodist origins of the Uniting Church and it is particularly important to the development of Pakington Street as the community center in Geelong West. Its Early English Gothic design was unusual in Methodist churches in Geelong. The read additions were designed by Davidson and Henderson, architects.
It is of regional significance.

Careful removal of the paint from the freestone dressings would greatly enhance the character of this building.

Pakington Street Methodist Church (former) now St Phillips Uniting Church - Physical Description 1
DESCRIPTION
Built in 1868 of rock faced bluestone with freestone quoining and dressings and a slate roof. It is a modest church in the Early English Gothic Style. This style was more common for Anglican churches in Geelong in the early 1840's and 1850's. The architect for this church is not known but it may have been Robert Balding, He was the architect of the Ashby School, Pakington Street, 1867. This building was also a modest quarry faced and qoiuned building as is the church. He was a devout Methodist and was the architect for a number of church buildings.
