Extensions to pier in 1885-1886, T-junction added 1887 - associated with ballast trade. Use by light craft. The area around the pier was used for bathing. Various additions and alterations during the 1920's. Pier was bas for ballast boat trade in 1937 and used for regattas.STEVEDORE STREET PIER - Interpretation of Site
Although this structure is in the correct locality for the former pier, it is unclear if it was part of its original structure, or a later addition associated with the construction of the seawall. Given the extensive reclamation works along the foreshore, it is possible that sections of the original structure may have been buried when this work took place in the 1880-90's, and may be the remnants of an earlier jetty structure that was later extended to form the pier.
The site has archaeological potential. The pier has historical and social connections to the local area for its association with trade and recreation.
