WILLIAMSTOWN ROWING CLUB - History
The Williamstown Rowing Club began in 1869 and housed 4 & 8 oar rowing skiffs, boats and gigs (BLC#21, WA, 30/10/1869). The site was purchased from White in 1875 (WA 28/8/1875; 18/9/1875), and a boathouse was added in 1876 (WC 9/12/1876). The Rowing Club is shown (MHT 1890) opposite Mariner St as a similar structure to the early Parsons Boatshed, with a rectangular (possibly boathouse) set over the water accessed by a narrow jetty from the foreshore. The club and associated gear was liquidated by the club's creditors to recover assets in 1892 (WC 20/8/1892; 27/8/1892), but the boatshed was still being used in 1893 (WC 4/2/1893), and was sold to Messr Greenland the next year (WC 10/3/1894).WILLIAMSTOWN ROWING CLUB - Interpretation of Site
The site now probably lies near the boat ramp at the southern end of the Parsons/ Anchorage Restaurant complex. Given that the original Parson's Boatshed now stands on solid ground, and is shown as the same shape and distance from shore as the Rowing Club structure (MHT 1890), it is likely that they now lie under shoreline reclamation, and that archaeological remains of the former facility may not have been demolished below the current landfill level, but were incorporated into the landfill itself. A modern boat-ramp at the southern end of the Parsons boat storage facilities is built upon a dressed bluestone base, possibly the remanant of the former facilities.
The site is of social significance as a recreational facility.
