JJ SAVAGE BOATBUILDERS - History
This site, like Blunt's Boatyard and White's Slipway sites was built on land reclaimed sometime before 1907 (BLC#9). Photograph from the mid 1920's shows a lengthy jetty, and a vessel on a slipway (BLC#24). JJ Savage, boat builders, were originally established in South Yarra in 1901 (Vines, 1989: np) but moved to Williamstown in 1935, and still operate at this location (Butler, 2000: 35). They engaged in repairing vessels up to 65ft, including fishing boats and pleasure craft, ferries, tugs, lighters and passenger vessels. During WWII, the company was an important supplier of small boats during war such as Navy lifeboats, cutters, assault landing craft and Army workboats and lifeboats. Their market has since changed to produce and repair fishing boats (Vines, 1989:np).
JJ SAVAGE BOATBUILDERS - Interpretation of Site
Mark Ski, a local commercial diver, has reported finding timber piles near the current slipway structure, although the origin of these is unknown and required further investigation.
Heritage Inventory Description
JJ SAVAGE BOATBUILDERS - Heritage Inventory Description
The boat repair shed is located on a substantial bluestone slipway base, possibly from an earlier construction. A small pier is located at the southern end of the site, with a railed leeway/slipway between this feature and the boat shed. A long timber pier is attached to the south eastern end of the boat shed, and consists of paired timber piles spaced approximately 3 m apart.
Bluestone slipway base, timber piles and pier. The site has archaeological potential to produce artefacts relating to the pier's use and boatshed operations.
