Residence - Physical Description 1
DESCRIPTION
The site at 4 Francis Street has visual connections to Newtown Hill to the north and to the substantial Palm tree and the Norfolk Pine tree to the south. This house is set in a single storey streetscape of mixed Edwardian, interwar Californian Bungalow and postwar homes. The house has typical front and side setbacks, with a driveway along the side. These setbacks are shown on the 1927 GWST Plan of Drainage.3 The site is bound at the front by a timber picket fence (of Victorian design), approximately 1200mm high.
The single storey weatherboard interwar Californian Bungalow house is characterised by a dominant gable roof form clad in galvanised corrugated iron? An early brick chimney with a projecting capping adorns the roofline. Wide overhangs and exposed rafters are features of the eaves. An early horizontal bank of timber framed windows are situated on the north end of the street facade. It has a large central light surrounded by a pivot highlight and vertical casements.
Banks of timber framed windows and weatherboard cladding have been introduced over the original verandah that was recessed under the gable.
Early decorative features of the design include the tapered lower reaches of the gable, brackets and gable ventilator.
