Tavistock - Physical Description 1
HISTORY
The site at 9 Mount Pleasant Road has visual connections with the Belmont Common to the east. This house is set in a streetscape of mixed styles of residential and commercial buildings. This house is similar in type and materials with others visually connected to it. The house has typical front and side setbacks, with a driveway along the side. These setbacks are shown on the 1928 GWST Plan of Drainage. The site is bound at the front by an inappropriate brick and timber fence, approximately 1700mm high.
The single storey, weatherboard Federation style house is characterised by a central dominant hipped roof with projecting gables flanking a return verandah. These roof forms are clad in galvanised corrugated iron. Two early and tall corbelled brick chimneys with terra cotta pots adorn the roofline. Wide overhangs are a feature of the eaves. The early timber framed windows are double hung and arranged in pairs. The front timber door may also be early.
A feature of the design is the return verandah, formed under the projection of the dominant hipped roof. It is supported by early timber columns, with worked brackets and fretwork valance. An early capped timber balustrade forms the verandah boundary.
Apart from the verandah elements, early decorative features of the design include the gable infill (brackets, stucco work and battening).
