Statement of Significance
Non-original alterations and additions, other than those specified above, are not significant.
Aesthetically this is a substantially intact and recognisable example of an early homestead set up by free settlers. In addition, this building has only had minor changes throughout its lifetime, and all changes that have been made are sympathetic to the building. The outbuildings throughout the immediate surroundings of the homestead are significant to the aesthetics and history of the building. 'The Pines' significantly contributes to the aesthetic and historic character of Moyarra and the surrounding district. (Criterion E)
'The Pines' was the main homestead of William Rainbow, a locally significant figure in the establishment of Moyarra and the surrounds. William Rainbow purchased the land originally selected by John Gannon, which extended to where is now the former Moyarra School (see MO-ANIN-PS). Of the 320 acres owned by the Rainbow family that Mr Rainbow donated one acre of his land to build the former Moyarra leased school, illustrating his sense of community and connection with the region.
