What is significant?
The c1929 electricity substation, its interior and the site to a radius of 25 metres.
How is it significant?
The substation is historically and aesthetically significant to the Shire of Nillumbik.
Why is it significant?
The substation is historically significant as the only example of a 1920s industrial building in the former Shire of Eltham, as a reminder of the electrification of the railway line (and network) in the 1920s and the impact that this had upon growth in the Melbourne region (Criteria A & B). The substation is aesthetically significant as an important feature of Hurstbridge's streetscape, which is characterised by early 20th century structures (Criterion E).
