Statement of Significance
Originally a tobacco factory, this five-storey building was constructed in 1888 for Moss White & Co, tobacco importers and manufacturers. Designed by the influential architect Nahum Barnet, the red brick and stucco building employs giant orders and romanesque detaling which became the predominant architectural form for many large factory buildings around the turn of the century.
The building is also of considerable social significance because of its welfare role since 1929, when the Salvation Army first established the Gill Memorial Home, providing relief to homeless men at the height of the great world depression.
