Statement of Significance
`Melbourne Terrace was erected in 1876-77 as a speculative venture by Woolf Davis. Davis occupied No. 1 and owned the whole terrace until the late 1890's. The architect was Norman Hitchcock. The two story brick structure has a two story cast iron verandah and a rendered facade with cornice, balustrade and centrally located name plate.
It is a typical boom style terrace and notable among the works of Norman Hitchcock. Composed of seven repetitive units, it is of interesting length. The deep cornice and balustrade, grape vine cast iron balusters and cast iron palisade fence are notable features. Its prominent corner position makes it an essential element of the Drummond Street precinct. It is a typical example of a building type which is a distinctive feature of inner suburban Melbourne.
Some of the ornamental cast iron balcony has been removed or covered. The cast iron palisade fence is compatible with the terrace. It appear that several decorative urns have been removed form the parapet.
