Statement of Significance
Miss Cavanagh erected the two-storey brick warehousein 1904. The architect was J. Edmund Burke and the builder F. B. Sewell of Stanley Street, Elsternwick.
The three bay facade is articulated by giant stylised brick piers supporting a flat entablature. The bays formed by these piers are almost fully glazed and are crowned by recessed arches. The facade was originally red brick with cement render and green paintwork to all joinery and decorative metalwork. Features include art nouveau style bands on each of the piers, vertical boarding above recessed arches and a decorative pediment articulating the centrally located entrance.
The facade is in an Art Nouveau style that was popular in th e early 1900s. Contemporary examples would include several banks (notably those by Sydney, Smith and Ogg) that were mainly erected for the State Savings Banks. Nos. 198-200 Little Lonsdale Street with its giant piers and recessed arches makes an interesting contrast to the composition of these banks and constitutes a notable example of warehouse design during this period. The building is a prominent and essential element in the series of brick warehouses in Little Lonsdale Street and around the Shot Tower. In scale and materials these warehouses enhance the Shot Tower and with the Tower create a notable precinct within the CBD.
