Statement of Significance
The former Carlton Creche is of architectural, historical, and social significance at the State level.
The former Carlton Creche has architectural significance as the first purpose built chreche constructed in Melbourne. The simple form of the building, with modest decoration and signage, is representative of early twentieth century welfare insitiutions and reflects the charitable purpose of the creche, which allowed for no extravagance.
The former Carlton Creche is historically important as it is representative of an early twentieth century welfare institution. Through its continued opertion as a childcare facility over eighty years it has the ability to demonstrate the changing patterns of employment of women due to economic factors, wartime, post-war immigration and changing social values.
The former carlton Creche is socially significant as an innovative response to the needs of working women and their children. The continued use of the creche as a childcare facility over a period of eighty years reflects social change in Victoria. The establishment and operation of the creche by middle and upper class women illustrates the philanthropic thinking of the time with regard to working class women and their children.
