Statement of Significance
Designed by Charles Webb, 96 Pelham Street, Carlton, was built for Banks & Company, a prominent clothing manufacturing firm, in 1884 by H Lockington. Built of multi-coloured brick on a bluestone base, the well proportioned, symmetrical front elevation has a semi-basement and flat arched windows to the first and second floors.
Charles Webb, the eminent architect whose designs included the South Melbourne Town Hall and the Windsor Hotel, also designed several warehouses which have since been extensively altered or demolished. It is interesting to note that the brick work of this building is still intact (it has not been rendered or painted), and that the building is still being used by the clothing industry.
