Statement of Significance
Amasterpiece of Second Empire architecture and the first such example in Melbourne, designed by William Pitt in 1886 for a site associated with the theatre since 1854; notable in its day for its marble staircase, electric lighting, interior decoration, and the roof designed to roll open to the sky; modified at different dates, especially by the modern street awning. The signwriting on the southern gable was noted.
