Statement of Significance
Tide Gauge House was erected in either 1858 or 1860 at the foot of Breakwater Pier, Williamstown, and was moved to its present location in 1955.
The octagonal, bluestone structure had a battered base, now presumably buried, with recessed panels above chamfered openings and the masonry is smooth finished.
Tide Gauge House is a rare example of an automatic tide gauge, is architecturally notable for the design and detailing of the bluestone structure and is an important link with the historic port of Williamstown.
Classical Revival in detailing, the structure is an important example of a utilitarian sturcture given architectural treatment to render it a picturesque structure. The detailing and stonemasonry of the bluestone, especially the cornice and the roof, are most distinctive.
Classified: c 1959
