Statement of Significance
Nathan's Terrace is an unusually large and very elegantly detailed set of twelve single storey villas dating from the land boom period of Melbourne's development. It is an important example of the work of the German architect William Wolf. Work commenced on Nathan's Terrace in 1888 and the contractors were O'Dea and Kennedy. The terrace is located on sloping ground and rather than stepping the individual villas down the slope, the architect in this case chose to adopt a uniform cornice line; thus, the villas at the lower end of the street have taller elevations than those at the upper northern end. The cornice therefore is the generating line of elevation, with the unusual window mouldings and attached half columns being suspended from it.
The villas are conceived in a variety of compositions, some feature delightful Italianate towers while others include grossly exaggerated parapet decorations.
