Statement of Significance
Abberton House (Mandalay), 24 The Strand, Williamstown, is a two storey house erected to the designs of surveyor William Bull in 1858 for Ships Chandler Captain William Probert. Constructed of stuccoed bluestone, the symmetrical house has a very flat slate roof presenting the appearance of a pyramid to the principal facade. There is a single storied verandah with central gabled porch overlooking the Bay and string courses and the window surrounds are distinctive.
The house is an early surviving, substantial house, important architecturally and for its role in the streetscape of The Strand and the historic townscape of Williamstown. Mandalay is representative of the substantial houses which lined Hobsons Bay in the nineteenth century, many with their own piers across The Strand. Architecturally the house is in a Colonial, Georgian derived style, unusual for its roof shape , but otherwise fairly typical of its era.
The property is essentially intact.
