Statement of Significance
AHC Statement of Significance
The single storey brick and stone residence at 33 Tweedside Street, Essendon, was apparently erected c.1860 for W Fergusson esq. in an early Victorian Italianate style. The encircling verandah with flat tuscan columns and flat ribbed iron roof extends around three sides sheltering stucco ruled brick walls virtually without ornamentation. The roof is clad with slate and the original structure periodically extended.
The history of the residence at 33 Tweedside Street, Essendon, remains somewhat obscure. This once fine early Victorian Italianate style residence with distinctive verandah form, an interesting frontdoor assembly, transom lights and side lights, has been converted to seven separate flats. The verandah has been enclosed and the interior partitioned to destroy the integrity of the architecture. Only the basic building form and some elements of the original enhancement survive intact.
The integrity of the residence at 33 Tweedside Street has been completely reduced by the conversion to flats.{ Restoration and renovation had transformed the property once more into a single residence by 2006.}
