Statement of Significance
The former Lewis and Whitty factory is of State significance as a substantial and imposing blacking factory which served the nationally important boot and shoe industry of Collingwood/Fitzroy. Its architectural significance arises from the adoption of the Flemish gable form and Flemish bond brickwork which is unique in an industrial structure. It as also important as an example of a "noxious" industry able to operate in the midst of a dense residential area before the imposition of regulations on industry. The later association with Parson's and Lewis is also of note.
