Statement of Significance
Constructed in 1887 to the design of important architect Alexander Davidson, this former engine house is architecturally, historically and technologically significant at a State level.
Although its facade has been altered by the removal of the windows of the westen bay and on one bay east of the centre, the other major elements, decorative cement dressings and the use of stilted Gothic and segmental arches, remain in combination with bichrome brickwork on a bluestone base. Internally, some original cast iron columns and fittings also still exist. It has historical significance as the fifth engine house to be built of Melbourne's former cable tram netowrk, which was the most extensive single cable tram system in the world.
Classified: February/March, 1993
