Statement of Significance
The London Hotel Assembly Rooms adjacent the London Inn were erected c.1862 for William Douglas as an extension to the original building of c.1850-53. Residential accommodation, meeting rooms and livery stable were included in this two-storey stucco rendered masonry structure which is designed with a banded, rusticated ground floor facade and astylar upper level in a style derived from the Italian Renaissance.
In the first decades of settlement, the Western District trading port at Portland was heavily dependent upon the wool trade and shipping activity. The London Hotel Assembly Rooms were erected at the height of this prosperous trading activity and this establishement was an important meeting place for merchants, traders and local organisations. The London Hotel was a favoured place amongst ships' passengers staying in Portland. This Italian Renaissance style building is a conservative design commonly adopted for buildings in the 1860s.
The London Hotel Assembly Rooms has been converted to professional office accommodation. The interior has not been inspected.
