Statement of Significance
The result of an architectural competition of 1935 and designed by Melbourne architect, E H Anderson, the Bendigo Baby Health Centre is of Regional significance as an externally well-preserved and successful example of the Moderne style as adapted to a small-scale public building and, historically, the focus of the Bendigo community's (and the State's) demand for better health services after the surge in family formation after World War 1. As part of a once larger civic complex devoted to women's health and family life, the centre (with the nearby kindergarten) still contributes to a locally important precinct which occupies a prominent site in Bendigo's most important thoroughfare. This is the earliest post-built Baby Health Centre known in the region and the first public building to break from conservative revival styles in the Bendigo region.
