Statement of Significance
Designed by the Geelong architect, Thomas R Yabsley, the George and Dragon Hotel was built in 1855 for Mr McHardy. The Hotel was constructed from basalt, with sandstone mouldings to produce distinctive elevations from a typically simple form. The pronounced voussoirs, vermiculated keystones and subtle bays intorduced into the facades provide individuality despite alterations in the 1920's to the ground floor windows. Henry Billing was an early licensee (1856-8) who possessed an extensive private zoo. He exhibited his Bengal Tiger at the Geelong Fine Arts Exhibition in 1857. Another notable part of its history was its use as the Geelong Grammar Preparatory School from 1878 for many years following, old Geelong Grammar being nearby in Maude Street. The Classification includes main building; excluding the c 1920 leaded windows on the east and the corner window which replaced the original door. It is noted that the keystone cornice and stucco architrave are missing from the doorway.
