Statement of Significance
The former Donaghys Ropeworks is of State significance as an obsolete technology and the only intact ropewalk in Victoria. The ropewalk represents an extraordinary example of an industrial process, namely the laying of large ropes by the walk method, and incorporates some items reflecting local technical accomplishment, especially in respect of the machinery designed and manufactured by Donaghy's themselves, such as the Gallantyne, steel "top" and other rope making machinery. While the buildings are very utilitarian, the nineteenth and early twentieth century machinery and fittings are unique examples of ropemaking technology.
The rope walk is one of only two surviving rope walks and a unique example of a building type characterised by its extreme length. Equipment in the rope walk represents adaptation over time to new methods and changed demands with at least three and probably more periods represented, possibly including 1870s originals, early twentieth century improvements and 1950s imported components with local adaptations.
The site also reflects the role of the rope makers themselves, who were a unique cultural group evidenced by the closeness of the community of workers, long service and family allegiances, as well as the close co-operation between the main rope works owning families.
