Statement of Significance
Designed by H.A. Williams of the Public Works Department, the building was erected in 1865. The contractor was Mr. Stevens. The single storey brick structure comprises a single gabled court room with flanking offices to the rear. The centrally located public entrance is expressed by a brick porch with a segmental arch entrance. The window openings are also composed of segmental arches.
This is a fine example od court house architecture in the conservative classical style. Its careful massing and articulation express the building's various elements and their relative importance. This is enhanced by the distinctive colour of the local bricks and by superb detailing. The recessed front entrance with its series of segmental arches and the extrados mouldings to the window openings are particularly notable. The building is an essential element in the townscape of this important historical town.
The building is intact.
