Statement of Significance
District Hospital is a brick building variously erected and altered. The first portion was opened in 1860 with additions in 1862, all by architect D R Drape. T F Kibble is believed to have designed the central, double storied section. The originally face brick structure was given its present elaborate stucco decoration later when the verandahs were removed. Features are the two side wings, portico and the stuccoed pilasters and parapet.
The District Hospital forms part of the important historic townscape of the former gold-mining town of Maldon, one of the most notable in Victoria. The hospital is a landmark in the town and has historical associations. Architecturally, the conservative Classical Revival design is most unusual and important. The composition of the structure is most uncommon and the detailing is most distinctive. The architectural history and evolution of the building is also unusual and notable.
District Hospital is in good condition and is reasonably intact. The face brick section, the pediments and first storey were recentlypainted.
