Statement of Significance
William Rutledge, a wealthy Port Fairy merchant, purchased the site in 1847 and soon afterwards erected a substantial Colonial Georgian style stone dwelling of ten rooms with enclosed verandah. In 1885 the new owner, John Meagher, largely obliterated the original design, but the later facade with its stylised ornamentation is a distinctive and noteworthy composition. The building has been recently converted and extended for youth hostel accommodation.
