Statement of Significance
This Colonial design building was erected in 1849 for T H Osborne, proprietor of the Port Fairy Gazette. It has a distinctive timber parapet, glazed shop fronts and facade pilasters. After 1853 operations were transferred to various other premises until 1880 when a disastrous fire destroyed the newest Gazette office, causing a retrun to the original premises.
The Port Fairy Gazette and adjoining Printing works are the oldest commercial buildings in Port Fairy and a rare example of early Colonial architecture in Victoria. The Gazette, which first appeared on 6th April, 1849, is the second oldest provincial newspaper in Victoria still in publication. The present buildings, which were specifically constructed to house the newspaper's operations in 1849, have since 1880 been continuously occupied by the Port Fairy Gazette. The facades of the Port Fairy Gazette Office and Pringing Works are recognisably intact. The interior has been somewhat re-arragned to accommodate changes in printing and administration operations.
