Statement of Significance
Extract from 'Port Fairy Historic Area': Report: Hospital facilities were established in the town of Belfast (now Port Fairy) in July 1846 and the oldest portion of the present building was constructed in 1855 for the Belfast Benevolent Society. The building was extended in 1875 and various unsympathetic alterations have been undertaken. The hospital survives, however, as an important early institutional building in the town.
The Port Fairy Hospital comprises a two-storey central block, symmetrically arranged, with single-storied wings to either side. Despite unsympathetic atlerations, the 19th century form of the building can be fairly easily ascertained.
