Statement of Significance
These two attached stone houses are possibly the oldest known buildings in Bendigo. No 178, Specimen Cottage was erected in 1856 forand possibly by, James Brierley, a stonemason. He also built number 180 in 1861 and according to the rate books the occupier in 1864 was listed as Maria Steel, harlot. An unusual feature of number 180 is the cantilevered first floor timber verandah and these two cottages are architecturally, socially and historically significant in the history of early Bendigo.
