Historic value
This is a very large old specimen growing in the grounds of the Wesley Church. The bluestone church was constructed in 1867 and the Cork Oak (Quercus suber) is located in a prominent position between the church and the main shopping thoroughfare. The book "Portland Bay Methodists" states that the acorn was brought from Spain by Samuel Winter-Cooke of 'Murndal' and planted circa 1875. It is one of Australia's largest and oldest Cork Oaks.
