Statement of Significance
Contribution to the landscape of historic garden
Rare or localised
Aesthetic value
This is an impressive tree of a species uncommon in cultivation in Victoria. The tree's outstanding size and position along the creek walk, which is lined with deciduous trees (Tilia, Quercus, Carpinus) generally planted in pairs, makes a significant contribution to the landscape of this historic garden. The tree produces a spectacular autumn display. This tree leans over the creek and is on the edge which is subject to erosion.
This tree is located beside the creek on the east side of the house.
St Fillan was purchased by Sir James Munro (Premier of Victoria 1890-92) in the late 1880s and the planting is thought to be from this period.
