Statement of Significance
Contribution to the landscape.
Aesthetic significance.
A magnificent avenue planted between 1878 and 1890. Together with Royal Parade and Bacchus Marsh, this avenue ranks amongst the best examples in the State and is particularly outstanding due to its uniformity and intactness. A central row was removed in 1925 for the construction of the tramline. Three recent plantings and four other trees have been pollarded outside St Vincent's Hospital. Their decline was apparently due to herbicide damage.
