Statement of Significance
Contribution to the historic garden
Rare or localised
Rare specimen tree. Seeds of this species were collected by the botanical explorer Robert Fortune in 1844 when he first discovered the conifer in the mountains of East China. The tree was successfully introduced into the Royal Botanic Gardens and cones from there were sent to the Kew Gardens for identification at the turn of the century. It was from that seed that this attractive species was reintroduced to European cultivation.
