Statement of Significance
The Richmond historic area represents a compact area in which a diversity of working-class housing types exist. The area is important because of the range of designs and materials utilised in the precinct. In Waltham Place, for example, there are seven two-storey, red brick terraces, whilst on the south side of Hodgson Street there are three pairs of sem-detached, double fronted, brick houses. At the western end of Hodgson Street there are a number of tiny single fronted weatherboard cottages, whilst on the south side of Berry Street there is a large two-story, double fronted timber house.
This diversity of housing types is partly due to the absence of strict municipal building regulations in the late 19th century. The often small cottages, built on narrow frontages, face lanes so narrow that it is impossible to turn a car in them. These lanes are the result of private subdivision with few controls. However, it is these features which give character to a precinct; often lacking planned areas, where strict building regulations lead to regimental conformity.
