Statement of Significance
This corner two-storey rendered brick & stone building was erected in 1856 for, and possibly by, James Brierly, a stonemason. Built with an extensive cellar and used originally as a store and beer shop, there have been various alterations and additions over the years. It was listed in 1860 as a house and restaurant, in 1865 it was called the Royal Princess Hotel and in the 1920's it became associated with the motor industry.
James Briely also owned and lived in the adjacent Specimen Cottage which was also erected in 1856 and together the two buildings formed a notable part of the history of Bendigo.
Classified 15/10/1981
Demolished: 1983
