LOTHAIR MINE - History
The Lothair Company commenced deep lead mining in the 1860s and in the early 1870s was taken over by the South Clunes Company. The South Clunes group of mines ended up being the field's most success deep lead venture but in terms of the State's mining history the gold returns were relatively insignificant.
LOTHAIR MINE - Interpretation of Site
A deep lead mine that has an intact heap with many well defined dumping lines. The shaft is filled and there are traces of machinery foundations. The site is located on a Crown Land Reserve

LOTHAIR MINE - Heritage Inventory Description
There is a small wetland located to the south-east of the mullock heap. Mullock heap - Large heap with fifteen dumping lines. The longest dumping line is about 60 metres. Mining machinery foundations - the foundations are located at the base of the heap, north-west corner. Boiler setting - Remains of stone (basalt blocks set in soft mortar) boiler setting. One wall of the boiler setting still stands, it is 30ft long, 2ft thick and 6ft high. The wall still has traces of its brick lining. Building - to the south of the boiler setting are the remains of concrete footings for a building measuring approximately 50ft x 20ft.The rest of the mining foundations have been flattened but there is a likelihood of buried foundations.Heritage Inventory Significance: The site has: Scientific significance - intact foundations Archaeological potential - evidence suggests there may be substantial buried foundations Network values - line of mullock heaps associated with the various shafts of the South Clunes Company. SIGNIFICANCE RANKING: RegionalRecorded by: David Bannear SiteCard data copied on 09/07/2024: When recorded the site components were an intact mullock heap with multiple dumping lines and some machinery foundations located at the northern end of the heap. The only above-ground feature being a single stone wall of a boiler setting. The shaft visible was a depression. The site still survives in this condition.
