Statement of Significance
What is significant?
The former Wilkinson and Sibley Garage, at 1 Foster Road, Toora, built in 1926, is significant. The Interwar concrete block garage has a scalene gable roof with wide corner splay which has retained the original wooden garage doors. The Foster Street elevation contains diamond shaped windows and a secondary car entry point. Other key features include:
- Interwar shopfront entrance including narrow doorway
- Painted projecting pillars around the Stanley Street and Foster Street elevations to break up different uses of the building
- Large windows with some original glass panelling on the splay corner still intact.
Non-original alterations and additions, other than those specified above, are not significant.
How is it significant?
The former Wilkinson and Sibley Garage, at 1 Foster Road, Toora, is of local historic and aesthetic significance to the South Gippsland Shire.
Why is it significant?
H istorically, the former Wilkinson and Sibley garage was built in 1926-27 on the prominent Stanley Street and Foster Road corner. The evidence of the motor garage still remains today with two car-width garage doors, one on the splay corner and one on Foster Road, and the lack of defined curb around the splayed corner so that cars could enter the garage. This building demonstrates the growth of Toora and South Gippsland. The former garage also demonstrates the importance of the cars as a form of transport within the South Gippsland Shire. (Criterion A)
Aesthetically, the former Wilkinson and Sibley garage is a unique building within the South Gippsland region. The four diamond shaped windows on the Foster Road elevation, the obtuse, scalene roof shape and the wide corner splay give the former garage a unique look. Its position on a prominent corner make the building a local landmark for both Toora and the South Gippsland Shire. The former Wilkinson and Sibley garage significantly contributes to the character of Toora. (Criterion E)
